Haemophilus influenzae type b meningitis resistant to ampicillin and chloramphenicol.
We report two cases of meningitis due to Haemophilus influenzae type b resistant to ampicillin and chloramphenicol. In one child the meningitis was preceded by pneumonia and pleural effusion. Both children responded to treatment with cefotaxime.

A case of ampicillin and chloramphenicol resistant Haemophilus influenzae meningitis successfully treated with cefotaxime is described.

With the decline in the rate of infections caused by Haemophilus influenzae serotype b since the widespread vaccination, non-b serotypes should be considered as potential pathogenic agents in children with invasive disease younger than 5 years old. We report the case of an immunocompetent 1-year-old boy with Haemophilus influenzae type f meningitis. The agent was identified in cerebrospinal flu...
متن کاملHaemophilus influenzae Type b Meningitis
The age-related acquisition of serum anticapsular and bactericidal antibodies to Haemophilus influenzae type b observed in rats was similar to that of humans. The antigenic source for this "natural" immunity was not identified, since neither pharyngeal infection with H. influenzae b nor enteric colonization by cross-reacting bacteria was detected. Infant rats surviving H. influenzae b bacteremi...
متن کاملCharacterization of chloramphenicol-resistant Haemophilus influenzae.
We examined nine chloramphenicol-resistant (minimal inhibitory concentration, greater than or equal to 15 micrograms/ml) Haemophilus influenzae strains isolated in various parts of the world to characterize the genetic and biochemical bases of the resistance; four were type b. All nine contained conjugative plasmids, ranging in molecular weight from 34 x 10(6) to 46 x 10(6), which encoded for r...
